- Sometimes a gun
- can become a
- cultural icon. The
- Colt 45 stands for
- taming of the
- American West;
- the Maxim gun
- won Africa for
- the white man;
- and before the
- collapse of the
- USSR , Mikhail
- Kalashnikov's
- AK-47 was the
- symbol of Soviet
- communism on
- the march
- #
- Cheap, reliable
- and readily
- available, the
- AK-47 was
- used throughout
- the Sixties by
- insurgent groups
- as diverse as the
- Viet Cong, the
- PLO and the IRA.
- It remains in use
- today, though
- technologically
- it has been
- surpassed by
- other weapons
- #
- Kalashnikov is
- considered by
- Western experts
- to have perfected
- the integrated
- weapons system -
- he designed a range
- of guns able to
- use interchange-
- able parts and
- ammunition. The
- advantages for
- any army are
- obvious
- #
- The collapse of
- communism has
- led to uncertain
- times for Mikhail
- Kalashnikov and
- the Russian
- weapons industry.
- But although the
- former super-
- power is reduced
- to poverty,
- Kalashnikov's
- invention is still
- likely to be an
- important export
- #
- Now in his
- seventies, Mikhail
- Kalashnikov has
- lived long enough
- to finally see his
- invention
- patented - while
- he lived under
- communism, he
- received no
- royalties for the
- weapon that has
- been sold by the
- million around
- the world
- #
- An AK-47 is
- recognizable in
- profile at a
- distance by its
- famous curved
- ammunition clip -
- a design copied
- for other rifles.
- Each clip contains
- 30 bullets
